Combating Depression

Depression and anxiety are little-understood illnesses that affect millions of people. They often accompany one another, and they can be quite debilitating. Many folks who suffer from depression or anxiety turn to prescription drugs as a solution. They often lead relatively normal lives, but the drugs mask the underlying problems and sometimes create dependencies or carry side effects that lead to additional health issues.

Of course, the first step in combating these illnesses is to see a physician and follow the advice in order to stabilize the situation. After that, one can do many things to return to a quality life.

Here are a few things to keep doing as you are combating depression so that the demon of depression doesn’t return.

Keep On Keeping On

The temptation will be to sleep too much-or too little.  Fight it.  Maintain a normal schedule, even when you don’t feel like it.  Most adults need around 8 hours of sleep a night.  If you find yourself getting further and further from that-and doing it at odd hours, as well-it’s time to look at what might be affecting your rest time.  Caffeine and alcohol can wreak havoc with a normal sleeping schedule, so try eliminating or limiting them for a while, or at very least not after 4 pm.  Along the same lines, keep up with exercise during the day-it will make your body more ready to sleep at night.  Most experts recommend at least 20 minutes of vigorous exercise 4 days a week as a minimum to keeping in shape.

You Are What You Eat

Everyone knows the old saying, but what we eat does affect how we feel.  And it’s doubly true when dealing with depression.  Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Try not to skip meals, especially breakfast-it can cause a nutrient roller coaster ride in your body that makes it difficult to maintain perspective.
Watch the sugar levels.  Snacks that are highly processed, with sugar as the # 1 ingredient, are the equivalent of mainlining sugar to your bloodstream:  a quick high followed by a catastrophic crash.  If you just can’t help yourself, have it with a healthy meal to help counterbalance the effect of the sugar overload.
Do have foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids.  Some of the most common ones are cold-water fish such as salmon, nuts, soybeans, and tofu.  Many of the margarines sold in stores are also an excellent source of Omega.

Just Believe

If you’re one of those people who has never believed in anything, such as God, religion, or spirituality, ask yourself:  what if I’m wrong?  What do you have to lose by believing?  The belief that there is more to life, perhaps a Higher Power that is ultimately in control of life, the universe, and everything, or perhaps just a spiritual centering, belief system, or tool of focus to ground you, can be a powerful antidote for depression. Countless studies have shown the benefits of prayer and meditation on mental health and stress relief.  Dust off that old Bible, or the appropriate spiritual text of your choice, and give it another shot.  Seek and see if you find an answer that you’re satisfied with.
