When a women is pregnant, an increase in hormones, especially progesterone, causes a decrease in pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter muscle (LES). This muscle helps keep the food and acid in the stomach, and when the pressure is decreased, it no longer works as well.

Acid reflux symptoms are usually the same for pregnant women as for the general public, and symptoms usually become worse for the mother-to-be after meals and when she sleeps. It is estimated that as much as 80% of pregnant women have GERD symptoms and the symptoms vary from mild to very severe. It is rarely serious in this group and, of course, it is limited to the length of the pregnancy.
